Common Uses of Levoxin

Levoxin is prescribed for the treatment of several bacterial infections, including:

• Respiratory tract infections: such as community-acquired pneumonia, acute bacterial sinusitis, and acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis.

• Urinary tract infections: including both complicated and uncomplicated cases, as well as acute pyelonephritis.

• Skin and soft tissue infections: like cellulitis and abscesses.

• Prostatitis: chronic bacterial prostatitis.

• Gastrointestinal infections: such as bacterial gastroenteritis and typhoid fever.

• Bone and joint infections: involving bones and joints.

Dosage and Administration

Levoxin tablets are usually taken once daily, with or without food. Skipping doses or stopping the medication early can lead to antibiotic resistance. 

Precautions and Side Effects

Common side effects of levofloxacin include nausea, headache, diarrhea, and dizziness. Serious side effects, though less common, can occur and may include tendon rupture, nerve damage (peripheral neuropathy), and central nervous system effects like seizures or mood changes. Patients over 60 years of age, those taking corticosteroids, or those with kidney, heart, or lung transplants may be at increased risk for tendon problems. 

Levofloxacin may cause sensitivity to sunlight, so it's advisable to avoid excessive sun exposure and to use sunscreen or protective clothing when outdoors. Additionally, this medication can interact with certain other drugs and supplements, such as antacids, iron, and zinc, which can interfere with its absorption. It's recommended to take levofloxacin at least 2 hours before or after such products.
